Sound familiar?

Mountain homes are hard on contractors who cut corners.

These are the three things homeowners tell us most often on the first call, and what we do differently about each one.

I can't get anyone to call back. How we fix it

You'll talk to Fred directly — not a call center — and get a reply during business hours.

I'd need three different contractors. How we fix it

Design, carpentry, drywall, flooring and paint all come from one team on one schedule.

The price kept going up. How we fix it

You get a written, itemized quote up front. If something changes, we talk about it before we do it.

What we do

From one repainted bedroom to a cabin kitchen rebuilt from the studs.

Painting is the core of the business. The same crew also does the tile, drywall, trim, decks and full kitchen and bath remodels, so you never have to line up four trades yourself.

Painter's notes

The finish is only as good as what is under it.

Most of the hours on a paint job go into work you never see. Here is what that looks like, and which sheen we put where.

What a proper repaint includes

  1. 1

    Protect

Floors, furniture, fixtures and landscaping covered. Switch plates and hardware come off.

  2. 2

    Repair

Nail pops, cracks and holes patched. Loose paint scraped back to a sound edge. Soft wood replaced.

  3. 3

    Sand, caulk, prime

Patches sanded flush, gaps caulked, bare spots primed so the topcoat lays down evenly.

  4. 4

    Cut in and roll

Clean lines at ceilings and trim, two finish coats, then a walk-through with you.

Which sheen goes where

  • Ceilings

    Flat

Hides seams and roller marks under raking light.

  • Bedrooms, living rooms

    Matte or eggshell

Soft, forgiving on older walls, and wipes clean.

  • Kitchens, baths, laundry

    Satin

Stands up to moisture and scrubbing.

  • Trim, doors, cabinets

    Semi-gloss enamel

Takes knocks and cleaning without marking.

  • Exterior siding

    Satin acrylic or penetrating stain

Flexes through temperature swings and sheds water.

Two finish coats.

One coat shows lap marks and the old color underneath. Our estimates are written for two.

Rot gets cut out.

Paint over soft wood lasts a season. We replace it, prime every face and caulk it first.

We watch the weather.

Exterior coatings need dry wood and the right temperature to cure. We schedule around both.

Built before 1978?

Tell us the age of the house. Older paint may contain lead, and the prep is planned around it.

Who shows up

A High Country crew, not a franchise.

Pell's Painting and Remodeling is a local company based in Boone. We work on the same mountain roads our customers live on, which means our reputation rides on every job.

  • This area is home, so the work has to hold up
  • We set the right expectation, then deliver what we said
  • Painting, tile, drywall, trim and decks under one contract

How we work

Four steps, whether it is one room or the whole house.

The same order runs a simple repaint and a full remodel.

  1. Look, then quote

We visit, look at the real surfaces, and give you a written price. Prep and access are what move the number, and we explain which.

  2. Prep and protect

Drop cloths down and furniture covered. Then wash, scrape, patch, sand, caulk and prime.

  3. Build, then paint

On a remodel the tile, trim and drywall go in first. Paint comes last, by the same crew, so nothing gets scuffed.

  4. Walk it with you

Before we pack up we walk the job together. Touch-ups happen then, not after a call-back.

The rooms we build

Kitchens, baths, cabins, decks, and everything between.

The kind of work that comes out of one crew doing the carpentry, the tile, the drywall and the paint.

Before you call

Questions we get every week.

Not covered? Call 828-964-2834.

Do you do the remodel and the painting, or do I need two contractors?

One contractor. The same crew does the painting, tile, drywall, trim, decks and full kitchen and bath remodels. That removes the handover between trades, which is where most schedules and budgets slip.

Will you just paint, without any remodeling?

Yes. A single room, a whole interior or an exterior repaint are all jobs we take on their own.

When can exterior painting and staining be done in the mountains?

The exterior season here is shorter than in the foothills. Coatings need dry wood and mild temperatures to cure, so most exterior work is scheduled from spring through fall. Call early to get on the calendar.

Do you stain log homes, cedar siding and decks?

Yes. We clean the wood, make repairs, and apply a stain or sealer suited to the species and its exposure to sun and weather.

Can you refinish my kitchen cabinets instead of replacing them?

Often, yes. If the cabinet boxes are sound, refinishing or refacing gives a new look for much less than replacement. We will tell you honestly which makes sense once we have seen them.

How much will my project cost?

It depends on the size, the condition of the surfaces and how much prep is needed. We look at the job in person and give you a written price before any work starts.

Which towns do you cover?

Boone, Banner Elk, Blowing Rock and West Jefferson in North Carolina, Trade in Tennessee, and the communities in between. If you are nearby and not sure, call and ask.

How do I get an estimate?

Call us or fill in the form below. We will set a time to come out, look at the work, and follow up with a written estimate.
